Preacher’s Cave
In 1648 Capt Sayle and 70 english puritans were shipwrecked just off Ridley Head Beach on the Devil’s Backbone Reef off the northern tip of the Island they named Eleuthera – Greek for freedom. They found shelter in Preachers Cave just a short distance from the beach. This cave was used as their church for another hundred years as the Eleutheran Adventurers moved inland to settle. Easy to find – drive as far north as you can until you reach the end of the road. Left turn takes you to Spanish Wells – turn right at the rock to go to Preachers Cave.
